The Lakes boys volleyball program is entering a new chapter this season under head coach Kelli Rettig, a 2020 graduate of the school who is returning to a program that has been important to her. Having previously coached girls volleyball and gaining experience with a boys club team, Rettig developed an interest in the boys game and saw this as an opportunity to give back to a program that helped shape her. Taking over a relatively young and inexperienced roster, Rettig quickly noticed something beyond skill level.
“They’re coachable, hardworking, and eager to learn,” Rettig said. “That combination is huge.”
While acknowledging there is still work to be done, Rettig emphasized the team’s untapped potential and willingness to improve. Because of the team’s youth, the focus this season is centered more on development than results. Rettig is prioritizing building a strong foundation, both in fundamental skills and in overall understanding the game.
“If we can grow consistently and improve across the board, that’s a win for us,” Rettig said.
One of the key changes being introduced is a faster paced offensive system. The goal is to create a more dynamic and competitive style of play, even though it may take time for players to fully adjust. Along with these strategic changes, players have responded positively to Rettig’s coaching style, showing a willingness to accept feedback, make adjustments, and put in the work needed to improve. Team success is more than playing, it is also about building a culture.
The program is centered around being “positive, accountable, hardworking, respectful, and disciplined,” creating an environment where players push each other while staying supportive. Upperclassmen play an essential role in shaping that culture. With underclassmen looking to them for guidance, their leadership helps set the tone for the entire program and reinforces the expectations Rettig is working to build. Still, Rettig believes the impact of the program goes far beyond volleyball.
“It’s about the relationships you build, the discipline you develop, and the lessons you carry with you beyond the court,” Rettig said. “Our goal is to help shape not just better athletes, but better people.”
As the season progresses, there is a clear sense of optimism surrounding the program. With a motivated group of players and commitment to improvement, Lakes boys volleyball is working toward building something that can grow and succeed in the years ahead.
