A great head coach is defined not only by wins and losses, but by culture and the standards they set. Lakes Basketball Head Coach, Chris Snyder, shows what it means to lead a successful basketball program through leadership, accountability, and focus on growth.
One of the most important qualities of a good head coach is creating a competitive environment. Snyder schedules tough opponents and expects his players to compete at a high level every game. He believes growth comes from being tested, not from taking shortcuts. The results back that up as the program has won over 55% of its games this season.
“We have played a very competitive schedule and have shown up well in games,” Snyder said.
Facing strong competition forces players to stay locked in, adjust to different styles of play, and push through adversityBeyond competition, Snyder also understands the importance of support from both the school and within the team. He recognizes how meaningful it is to the players when the entire school gets behind the program and brings energy to the gym. That support helps create an environment players are proud to represent and makes the victories even more rewarding.
Leadership is another key part of Snyder’s coaching that separates him from the rest. Snyder expects everyone on the roster to contribute to the program, not just seniors or captains.
“We are a team that values collective leadership,” Snyder said. “All players have a role in leading our team and program and are expected to demonstrate that at all times.”
His mindset builds trust within the team and pushes his players to take ownership of their roles. It also prepares underclassmen to step in bigger positions, creating a stronger program year after year.
A good head coach also knows where to place the focus. When it comes to goals, Snyder prioritizes daily habits over outcomes.
“Goals are good, but in the hoops program, we focus more on the standards and activities that are needed to reach goals,” Snyder said.
Those standards include consistent effort, accountability, and commitment. Stressing improvement in small areas helps Snyder teach his players that progress comes from daily work, not wins or losses. That mindset keeps the team focused on what they can control each day in practice and in games, rather than the scoreboard or the results.
Coach Snyder’s impact is seen in both the wins and in the way his team competes. With a winning record and a strong culture, he continues to set the standard for what effective high school coaching looks like. Snyder’s approach is setting the Lakes Basketball program up for long-term success.
