A choker is a tight-fitting necklace that is typically made out of velvet, plastic, beads, leather or some metals. While the choker necklace was a very popular trend in the 90’s, it seems to have reappeared on the runway and in the school hallways within the past year. More and more stores such as Forever 21, Urban Outfitters and PacSun have put chokers on display, attempting to keep up with the recent accessory outburst.

“I like chokers because they’re trendy and they add something unique to my outfit,” said Sophomore Camille Joyner. “They are so trendy lately because of models such as Kendall Jenner wearing them on the runway and on the streets,” Joyner said.

Some fashion bloggers believe that this trend is popular again because it’s edgy and different and adds grunge-like style to the simplest of looks. Oversized flannels, ripped and faded jeans and black combat boots have been popular fashion items for the past couple of years and it was only a matter of time before the choker came along with them.

While the choker is mostly worn with casual outfits, they can also add an elegant touch to a gown or party dress. Those made of velvet or leather are most likely to be seen with such attire. The accessory can be dressed up or dressed down, making it a year round staple piece.

The choker made its first runway comeback appearance in Spring and Summer 2016. Yet, it is back again at the New York Fashion Week for Fall and Winter 2016 to 2017, showing that this trend still has more to look forward to.

Whether it is on the runway or in the hallways, the choker has made a comeback. It combines grunge, vintage, and simple uniqueness that fits many different looks. Will it fade away like it did years ago  or is it here to stay this time?
