The future is bright for Lakes basketball. Sophomores Ben Newcomb and Dorian Pullen look to bring Lakes some hardware in the near future. Both Ben and Dorian have been varsity starters for the majority of their sophomore year. After watching a Lakes basketball game this year, any fan can tell how much chemistry there is between Newcomb and Pullen. The two not only have played on Lakes together, but they have spent the last three years playing AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) together. When asked about playing with Dorian, Ben said “Us playing together outside of Lakes basketball gives us that extra boost of chemistry… It’s like we know what will happen next before it actually happens.” Dorian agreed by stating “ We hold each other accountable for mistakes while also being able to support each other.”

This connection will give them an advantage over other teams for years to come. Newcomb has had an impressive season so far. In 21 games played Newcomb is averaging 10.6 points per game, and is shooting 44% from the field. He looks to keep building off of this and strives to break the Lakes’ all-time three-point record. Although Newcomb is going for that three point record, he says “it’s important that I don’t force shots, but if I’m there and I get an open look, I’m just gonna let it fly.” Playing on this team together gives Dorian and Ben an opportunity to showcase their skills together. Being a part of Lakes Basketball can mean many different things. Being part of a family, the bonds you make as a part of this team will last a lifetime. Players can attest to this being on Lakes basketball is like being a part of another family, The bonds will stick with you throughout your time at Lakes.

Dorian was a freshman last year with a lot of potentials, and when asked who his biggest role model was he said “Jimmy Kania”. Jimmy was the starting small forward last year for Lakes, and now is currently on Illinois Club’s basketball team. Instead of choosing an NBA legend, he chose another Lakes great, JJ Jackson. Who was the starting point guard for Lakes last year. JJ is a prime example of a great leader and someone who takes all the small parts of the game and shows how important they can be. Being on Lakes basketball is not easy though.
Dorian experienced moving up like many underclassmen do. Pullen shared “My welcome to varsity moment was probably when we played Antioch at Antioch. It was my first rivalry game, and a lot of people came to support both sides. It just showed me how much energy and noise goes on during a rival game”. Ben also had a “welcome to varsity moment” in that same game when he air-balled his first three and his second one hit the side of the backboard.
This was a tough environment in which they both struggled to find their groove. This was something they could learn from and eventually teach themselves how to keep their composure during this type of environment. Newcomb and Pullen are true stars looking to bring back a conference championship while also improving their personal game. The sophomores have big things ahead of them in their time left at Lakes. This duo looks to leave an impact on this program just like their mentors did for them.
