The Lakes Girls Golf team has achieved success at the highest levels during the past couple of years. Last fall, especially, was a year to remember.
Girls golf placed third at the extremely competitive annual Harold Abramson Invite and finished the season undefeated. They secured an NLCC conference title and it was the first time in Lakes history that girls golf qualified for sectionals.
The team is striving for similar success this year and they have already started off on the right foot. Led by seniors Maia Becker, Marley Gaskill, Jia Singh, and Heidi Jung, the team has continued its unbeaten streak from last year, and as of late September, they are 11-0.
Although Jung was not able to contribute to the team much on the course last year, as she was out for the majority of the season, she is motivated more than ever to have a successful senior season.
“I want to make up for all of the days I missed last year,” Jung expressed.
The girls are constantly setting individual and team goals and are eager to achieve them. “[As a team] I want to make it to sectionals again,” said Singh. “[For myself], I want to shoot a 45 at least twice in a row, which is shooting one over par for each hole.”
As for Jung, she is determined to keep her cool and not get upset over tiny mistakes.
“I get upset a lot. Staying calm, and going with the flow with things I think will really drop my scores,” she said.
Senior Maia Becker deserves more recognition than she receives according to Jung. “She goes under the radar a lot,” Jung said
“She’s, if not, the best in our conference, [the best] out of all of the girls, [and] all of the teams that we play.”
“…She’s consistently beating her own personal records and is the saving grace and the only reason we make it to sectionals and win conference. She does so much for [our team].”
Becker has won NLCC all-conference two years in a row and aims to make it three.
So now, the question everyone is asking: what is the secret to having an undefeated season? According to Singh, a huge part is having a positive team environment and strong chemistry with one another.
