California is currently experiencing one of the worst storms the state has experienced in over a decade, according to CNN. Thunderstorms drenched across the state last Tuesday morning and will continue throughout the week. Over 20 million people are under flood alerts due to fears that mudslides will start to spread. 

“Scattered to widespread instances of flash flooding will be possible, especially near steep terrain and burn scars,” the Weather Prediction Center said Tuesday afternoon. Currently, 34,000 remain under evacuation orders as more rain continues to flood the state. 

Many people are confused about how the state has been getting plumbed by these rains. It is being caused by “atmospheric rivers’ ‘ CNN said. Those are long, narrow regions in the atmosphere that can transport moisture thousands of miles. Most of the time California struggles to get rain but the state has averaged between 400% to 600% of total rainfall. Unfortunately, 17 people have passed away and a five year old boy is currently missing.

California isn’t in the clear just yet. According to the weather service, four more atmospheric rivers are expected to hit the state throughout this week. Rescue crews have been working 24/7 to try and save anyone that is still stuck in their homes. 

More than 100,000 people have lost their power due to the storms ripping the power lines down, said CNN.
