In late 2016, bees were a new addition to the endangered species list. This in itself was scary due to the fact that bees are a main pollinator when it comes to agriculture. However, within the past week it was announced that the addition of bees to the endangered species list was going to be delayed until President Donald Trump could look into this issue further.

Existing evidence reveals that bees should be added to the endangered species list. Their populations have decreased by 70 percent currently and continue to steadily decrease, according to Lakes Community High School Biology teacher, Will Barbanera. This decrease in population will have negative impacts to our future in agriculture.

“Without bees we pretty much wouldn’t be able to eat. There is a whole host of foods that a human wouldn’t be able to eat and without some of those our diets wouldn’t be as rich,” said Barbanera.

Some of these foods include apples, almonds, blueberries, cherries, avocados, and cucumbers among many others.

The primary reason behind bees being added to the endangered species list was to increase the funding to allow the Environmental Protection Agency to funnel money to organizations that would essentially raise awareness for the bees. The money would also go to researchers to investigate why bee populations are decreasing so much and how to solve that problem.

“As of now, the EPA and all these other organizations that want to save the bees won’t have those resources and that’s going to limit the people that can be reached by these organizations to increase awareness,” Barbanera said.

Bees are crucial to our environment and our survival. Without them, we would likely have trouble trying to exist without the foods necessary to our diets.
